Picking the right color foundation..any tips?

i always have a hard time picking the right shade because you cant really test them in stores. is there any tips or tricks to pick the right foundation shade?? also do you recommend any specific brand??Picking the right color foundation..any tips?
Well, if it's a decent drug store, they will let you return or exchange foundations if they're not the right shade. Just ask for their exchange policy, just so you know what it is.

You could also try going to any makeup counter in a department store, or Sephora. The higher end foundations tend to use more testers, have foundations that come in more shades, and have makeup artists that can definitely help you with matching you up with a colour.

I really recommend Make Up for Ever. Their Face and Body foundation is really great and comes in lots and lots and lots of shades.

Oh, and also know what you're looking for. Know your skin's undertone and what your shade is. Lookup foundations (www.makeupalley.com is great for reviews), and look at swatches people have done on the internet. They can be really helpful when trying to figure out what your shade is.Picking the right color foundation..any tips?
If you want a drugstore brand they are making it a lot easier to find a shade. Cover Girl has that foundation that has the plastic with all the shades and you put your hand underneath and from what I hear that works pretty well. But if you are willing to splurge a little go to Sephora where you can try various brands. The best foundation I have ever used is Make Up For Ever. I use their Mat Velvet + along with the Duo Mat powder but you can use either or. Also their HD foundation is really good I am probably going to switch to that one. But whatever formula they use its just so much better than any other I have ever tried. You can also go to MAC their makeup isn't that expensive and you can try the colors there as well. I am willing to splurge a little on the foundation just because that to me is the most important part of what you put on your face in regards to actual makeup. And with Make Up For Ever a little does go a long way. And to get really good application I recommend getting the MAC 187 or 188 brush the foundation seriously is flawless with that brush. I love Sephora because you can try everything before you purchase it and if you don't like it when you get home then that's your own fault. So definitely try Sephora and try various brands. I even tried Sephora brand and that is ok but I can't even recommend anything else other than Make Up For Ever because it truly is the best. Even peole who work for MAC have said how much they love Make Up For Ever foundation. The Mat Velvet + and the Duo Mat are both around $35 each and the HD is $40.
first its important to know if you have a warm or cool undertone then you can pick a good warm or cool foundation to match. its best to test it out on your jawline not your hand or something. you should consider going to a department store and getting a makeup artist to put your makeup on before you buy it i did this because i was tired of buying crappy drugstore makeup that didn't match
Use a tester foundation.

Try in on your chest, as this is the nearest skin tone to your face.

If you have oily skin don't use a liquid foundation.

It will also depend how much coverage you want for example if it just to cover freckles get one closest to your skin shade.

But to cover something more get a bit darker foundation
try Clinique in most major department stores, you wont break the bank and the sales person will make sure you get the best type, (liquid, cream, powder) for your skin and the correct color.
you are just going to the wrong stores!

ulta, sephora, macy's (clinique, estee lauder, bobbi brown), mac all have TESTERs that you can try the make up before you buy the wrong color

also, go out in the DIRECT sunlight before you buy it.... sometimes the artificial light in places like drug stores will cause you to match the wrong shade!

i would never suggest anything like covergirl or maybelinne... my absolute favorite is make up forevery HD foundation
