well for one thing always try the foundation on your face, never the hand. take three colors that u think are similar to ur skin color and then apply each color in a streak along the cheek down to the jawline in a well-lit area. The color that matches ur natural skin color the most is the right foundation for you. Or if you feel neither of them match ur natural skin color, try this technique again using two other colors and the one color you felt matched ur skin the best from the first test Continue until you find the best color for your skin.
Sephora is the best place to try it out. They let you try on makeup samples plus you can always ask an associate to help you.

go to sephora, they have the best testers, take a couple that you think match your skin tone, take a sponge brush (sephora always has them somewhere) and brush a little on your neck. make sure it matchess well not just in that light but brighter lighting too because make up looks differently in different lighting. than buy it. lol. done
but from my experience i like buying a shade lighter than what i really am because it blends a little better but thatsmy own opinion
You're supposed to match it to your neck tone. So whatever your neck color is your face color should be the same
try going to a place where you can try foundations on and can test it out. Hopefully you'll find the right color for you. Sephora (the make up store) is a great place to start
You should go to a Macy's and go to the makeup counters and they will match your shade for you.
