How do you determine your foundation number/color?

Is it just by trial and error, or is there another way.

PS, I do not have a Mac store around me.How do you determine your foundation number/color?
Why would it matter if you had a MAC near you?

MAC is not the only brand out there (thank God, seeing as MAC is such a so-so brand)

Go to the store, whichever one you buy makeup at, and take the sample product. Go near a window (with natural lighting) and apply some to your jaw line going from your cheek to the neck and see which one seems to ';disappear';. This is your match. How do you determine your foundation number/color?
well every brand of make-up has their own 'color pallete' so if you want to do trial and error make sure the makeup is refundable.

But if you go to your local drugstore there is usually a plastic thing and you put your hand under it and when it turns invisible its your color.

But if you go to an ACTUAL make-up store(like sephora) there is usually a consultant that will try the makeup on you to see if its the same color as your skin.
First and foremost, the most IMPORTANT thing to do before determining the perfect color for your face, is knowing which undertone your skin is: whether its a cool, warm or neautral tone. (if you have yellow, beige,or pink undertones)

then finding the foundation color is much more easy based on how light or how deep your skin color is. Dont look at numbers, because numbers can be deceiving, you have to test it out first.

Apply the shade to you jawline and blend it out, this is the best way to determine your foundation color
