How do you pick the right color foundation?

I have fair skin and I end either looking washed out or too dark. Also the foundation usually builds up in the crease around my nose no matter what I do.How do you pick the right color foundation?
Your foundation should match the color on your inside wrist. Why, you ask. Because if you haven't been tanning it should match your also hopefully, untanned face. If your makeup is creasing its not the right kind for your skin or may be an inexpensive brand. Try L'oreal or Revlon, I have good luck with those and they make my skin look great. Also, it could be caused by the face cream you use with your foundation...I never cheat, I use Olay products or Avon...Ponds is terrible!How do you pick the right color foundation?
I have the exact same problem as far as having fair skin and having a hard time finding the right color. I know you can go to a professional (like the make-up counters at malls and have them try and find a good color for you), or you can do like me.... I buy two foundations - one of the color that washes me out and one of the one that is just slightly too dark - and then I mix them myself. I buy small empty cosmetic bottles (they're like a dollar at walmart) and just pour both foundations in and shake it up real good. I know it sounds silly, but it's the best ';color'; for me and also it last twice as long. As far as building up in the creases around your nose...get a makeup sponges and just blend in as best as possible...maybe you're using too much. Good Luck to you!
you should try going to a makeup person behind the counters at department stores, then try out many of the sample on your face to see what color best fits you. They are usually very helpful and can help you pick out the perfect tone even if you doon't want to buy anythiing.
As far as the washed out look goes - you should try using a little bit of blush or maybe a light bronzer.





When picking out a foundation, you don't want to match it to your wrist. Go to the store without any makeup on your actual face and match it directly to you cheek. You want the make-up to blend with your actual skin tone so you don't have to apply it lower than your jaw line.





If you don't like to go out of the house without make-up on (like me!) find a nearby Avon representative at www.avon.com. They can try to help you pick the right shade and type of foundation. PLUS they can return it for no charge if you try it and don't like it. I think some drug stores do that too, but be sure to check with a sales associate first.





Also, if you have a good complexion, you might want to try Bare Minerals. They are very light and work great as long as you have a fairly clear complexion.

If you have fair skin, you might not even need a liquid cover up. There are powders you can use that look more real. If your skin isn't particularly blotchy, just a coverup might work too.
Try Estee Lauder double wear, or MAC. Also go to the department store and ask a makeup advisor what would be best for your skin type.

Always go lighter rather than darker, I am fair skinned and after the powder and everything the color was right. I have not used foundation for a long time so I couldn't reccommend a shade. I guess the foundation was always just a small shade too dark but after blending and powder it looked fine. Make sure to blend your chin line well! Just get a light powder

Get to different ones and mix them together until you get you skin tone.
try adding water to the build up. that's what i do and it really helps keep your face from turning orange. as for the cover up color. you might want to try putting some of it on your hand before you buy it. not only does the color matter but so does the brand. different brands have different colors. as for me i have fair skin myself and i use neutrogena skin clearing oil-free makeup. it has a natural look and it also works to clear blemishes. if you do decide to go with neutrogena i would suggest the color true beige. it is subtle but it works.

If you dont feel confident with foundation or the color you are choosing, then you should go down to a makeup store like Mac or a department store that has big names like Chanel, Dior, YSL, just ask them which shade of foundation would suit you and ask for tips on how to apply it.


Once you know the sort of colors you should be using you can get foundation anywhere, even at the drugstore.
